Own a Piece of Rock ‘n’ Roll History: Keith Richards’ Iconic Guitar from the Rolling Stones’ Some Girls Era Up for Auction!
Attention all music enthusiasts! An iconic piece of rock history is set to go under the hammer this Thursday, April 25th. It is none other than a 1977 Fender Telecaster-style guitar that was custom-built for the legendary Keith Richards by his longtime guitar tech and luthier, Ted Newman Jones.
This T-style guitar has been authenticated by Stones gear expert Andy Babiuk, who confirmed that Richards used this very model during the recording of the 1978 album, “Some Girls.” Known as a fan favorite among Rolling Stones fans, this album marked a significant moment in the band’s career.
Jones, also known as Newman, crafted the guitar with a unique mahogany body and pickguard, paired with an authentic Fender rosewood neck. He then added Tele bridge and neck pickups as well as a Fender bridge to complete the build. Notable features include a round pearl inlay on the back of the body with Newman’s ‘N’ and the year ’77.
This custom electric guitar was not only used during the Some Girls recording sessions but also accompanied Richards on tour in support of the record. This particular tour is often regarded as the peak of the Rolling Stones’ live performances, solidifying its place in rock history.
Following his work with Richards, Jones decided to shift his focus to his guitar store and luthiery business in Austin, Texas. The business, which he started with a loan from Richards himself, paved the way for his future endeavors in crafting high-quality instruments.
Over time, Richards’ custom Telecaster underwent significant changes, particularly during The Who’s guitar tech Alan Rogan’s involvement in the Tattoo You tour in 1981. At that time, a new all-rosewood model was created for Richards by David Schecter, leaving the original Newman T-style body unused.
As a result, the body found its way to Schecter, who revitalized it with a maple Fender neck featuring a rosewood board, along with a new bridge and pickup set. Subsequently, the instrument was sold to a radio station executive, with Richards’ signature and a special message on it.
The Keith Richards Some Girls custom T-style guitar, with a minimum bid of $400,000, will be up for auction on April 25th through Nate D. Sanders Auctions. Don’t miss your chance to own a piece of rock ‘n’ roll history!
