Exclusive: Taylor Swift’s Director Breaks Silence to Defend Controversial ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ Music Video
Joseph Kahn, the director behind Taylor Swift’s groundbreaking music video for “Look What You Made Me Do,” recently took to Twitter to voice his frustrations about gendered double standards within the music industry.
In a tweet on Wednesday (Aug. 30), Kahn expressed his dismay, stating, “If I plan something as a man, I’m a ‘genius,’ but if Taylor, as a woman, plans something she is ‘manipulative.’ Double standards. This is wrong.”
The music video for Swift’s latest single, “Look What You Made Me Do” from her upcoming album Reputation, has generated mixed reviews from critics. While some applaud it as a fresh direction for the singer, others criticize it as petty and flawed. The video, which premiered during the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, drew comparisons to Beyonce’s “Formation.”
Responding to these accusations, Kahn defended Swift’s video in a tweet on Friday (Aug. 25), stating that it was not intended to imitate Beyonce’s art style. He emphasized his admiration and respect for Beyonce, with whom he has worked with on several occasions.
The music video for “Look What You Made Me Do” shattered records, averaging 30,000 views per minute in its first 24 hours. It currently holds the title for the most YouTube and Vevo global streams within a 24-hour period.
