The Weeknd Exposes Grammy Corruption and Snub in Shocking Announcement
The Weeknd has recently expressed his disappointment after not receiving any nominations for the 2021 Grammy Awards for his latest album, ‘After Hours’. In a tweet shared on November 25, the artist, also known as Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, called out the Grammys, accusing them of being “corrupt” and demanding transparency for himself, his fans, and the music industry.
Following The Weeknd’s tweet, Recording Academy Chair Harvey Mason Jr. responded in a statement to Rolling Stone, acknowledging the artist’s disappointment and expressing surprise at the situation. Mason Jr. praised The Weeknd’s musical contributions and talent, noting that while deserving artists often outnumber available nominations, all nominees are recognized for their excellence by the voting body.
The nominations for the 2021 Grammys were unveiled on November 24, with artists like Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and Billie Eilish leading the pack with multiple nods. Both Swift and Lipa landed nominations for Album of the Year, with ‘Folklore’ and ‘Future Nostalgia’ respectively.
Despite the immense success of his hit single ‘Blinding Lights’, The Weeknd did not secure a nomination in the coveted Song of the Year category. This year, nominees in that category include tracks like Beyoncé’s ‘Black Parade’, Eilish’s ‘Everything I Wanted’, Lipa’s ‘Don’t Start Now’, and Swift’s ‘Cardigan’, among others.
While The Weeknd did not receive any nods this time, he is a three-time Grammy winner in the past. The artist snagged wins for Best Urban Contemporary Album for ‘Starboy’ and ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’ in 2018 and 2016 respectively, as well as Best R&B Performance for ‘Earned It’ back in 2016.
Despite the Grammy snub, The Weeknd had a successful night at the 2020 American Music Awards (AMAs) on November 22, taking home top honors in categories like Favourite Male Artist – Soul/R&B, Favourite Album – Soul/R&B, and Favourite Song – Soul/R&B.
