Exclusive: Taylor Swift fans fight for justice in Ticketmaster scandal – You won’t believe what happened in court!
Welcome to Music Nation 365, where we bring you the latest updates from the music industry! Today, Taylor Swift fans had their day in court following the controversial release of tour tickets that sparked widespread outrage.
In a federal court in Los Angeles, a predominantly procedural hearing took place in a case filed by around 340 fans who claim that Live Nation and its subsidiary Ticketmaster violated antitrust and consumer protection laws. The plaintiffs, represented by lawyers John Genga and Jennifer Kinder, were accompanied by a group of fans from different parts of the U.S.
The fans, described by their lawyers as feeling that the ticket-purchasing process is “broken” and “corrupt,” are hopeful that this case will mark a turning point in dismantling a perceived monopoly in the industry.
The controversy arose following the fall release of tickets for Taylor Swift’s “New Era” tour, her first in five years. The incident led to government scrutiny of antitrust laws, with a Senate hearing in January where Live Nation’s president and CFO Joe Berchtold issued an apology for the mishap.
The lawsuit filed in December alleges that the 2010 merger between Live Nation and Ticketmaster stifled competition in live events ticketing, resulting in inflated ticket prices. In a recent court filing, Live Nation sought to halt the proceedings and move the dispute to private arbitration, citing agreements made by ticket buyers during the online purchasing process.
Despite Live Nation and Ticketmaster’s attempts to resolve the matter outside of court, lead plaintiff Julie Barfuss emphasized that the fans are determined to see real change. Swift’s supporters were expected to gather for a rally outside the courthouse on the day of the hearing.
In November, shortly after the ticket release, Taylor Swift addressed the challenges faced by fans in securing tickets, expressing a desire to improve the situation for future events. The next court date is likely scheduled for May 25.
