Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift are undeniably two of the biggest names in pop music. Olivia’s admiration for Taylor has been evident throughout her career, with moments like her song “Drivers License” climbing the iTunes chart beside Taylor’s hits “It’s Time to Go” and “Right Where You Left Me.” The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star even took to Instagram to share her excitement, expressing her emotions in a post captioned, “Next to Taylor on the U.S. iTunes chart. I’m in a puddle of tears.”
The two talented singers eventually crossed paths and celebrated their friendship with a sweet snapshot together. However, behind the scenes, tensions arose when Olivia released her debut album, “Sour.” Rumors circulated that Taylor had sued Olivia for allegedly copying her music.
While there is no public confirmation of a lawsuit, Taylor and her team did accuse Olivia of copyright infringement regarding Taylor’s song “Cruel Summer.” Fans noticed similarities between Olivia’s “Deja Vu” and Taylor’s “Cruel Summer” upon the release of “Sour” in May 2021. Buzzfeed News reported that the issue was resolved in July of the same year, as Taylor, Jack Antonoff, and St. Vincent quietly received credits for Olivia’s “Deja Vu.”
The trio were credited for their contributions to “Deja Vu” due to the interpolation of “Cruel Summer,” with parts of Taylor’s song being incorporated into Olivia’s track. This acknowledgment entitled them to a 50 percent stake in the song’s royalties, resulting in substantial earnings for Taylor, Jack, and St. Vincent.
Despite accepting the arrangement, Olivia voiced her frustration in an interview with Time, expressing her displeasure at having her creativity questioned and dismissed. Apart from “Deja Vu,” Olivia’s song “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” also borrowed from Taylor’s work, particularly her 2017 track “New Year’s Day,” co-written with Jack Antonoff.
Prior to the album’s release, Taylor and Jack received their due writing credits on “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back.” While the incident may have caused temporary friction between the two artists, it serves as a reminder of the complexities and nuances within the music industry, where creativity and originality are highly valued.
