Author Accusing Taylor Swift of Copyright Infringement Voluntarily Dismisses Lawsuit
Author Teresa La Dart recently sued pop star Taylor Swift and her production company, Taylor Swift Productions Inc., in the US District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. La Dart alleged that Swift’s 2019 album “Lover” and its accompanying book stole its title and creative elements from La Dart’s 2010 book of the same name.
The case was referred to mediation by Judge John T. Fowlkes Jr. in May. Although the details of the mediation process were not disclosed, La Dart voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit. Prior to mediation, Swift and her company had moved to dismiss the lawsuit for failure to state a claim.
La Dart sought damages in excess of $1 million for profits attributable to the alleged infringement. Swift, known for successfully defending herself from copyright allegations, has faced similar accusations in the past.
In 2022, Swift defended herself against two lawsuits regarding the lyrics to her hit song “Shake It Off.” One case, brought by R&B artist Jesse Graham, was dismissed in February 2022. The other, brought by songwriters Nathan Butler and Sean Hall, was dropped in December of the same year.
William S. Parks of Cordova, Tenn., represented La Dart in the lawsuit, while Venable LLP represented Swift and her production company.
The case, officially known as La Dart v. Swift, was voluntarily dismissed on July 27, 2023.
Music fans eagerly await new developments in this case and Taylor Swift’s continued success in defending against copyright infringement claims.
