Go Behind the Scenes: Sipping Snakebites with Rock Legend Matt Sorum – Part I
Drummer Matt Sorum has been the driving force behind iconic bands like Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver, setting the rhythm for rock legends on stages around the world. However, there is more to Sorum than just his musical talents. I had the opportunity to chat with Sorum about his involvement with the Raven Drum Foundation, his early days in Hollywood, and a hilarious anecdote involving Charlie Sheen’s wine bill.
Recounting his youthful experiences, Sorum revealed that his first drink was beer, influenced by his wild father during the sixties. As he delved into the music scene, Sorum shared memories of drinking escapades in places like New Orleans and Hollywood’s Rainbow Bar and Grill, where he rubbed shoulders with fellow musicians.
Transitioning from bar regular to stage performer, Sorum reminisced about his humble beginnings at Hollywood’s jam nights, where his musical journey truly began. He also touched upon the challenges and anxieties of watching peers skyrocket to fame while he climbed the ladder in the music industry.
Joining bands like The Cult and experiencing the rich music culture of England, Sorum highlighted the connection between creativity and environmental influences. Reflecting on his evolution from beer-centric days to appreciating fine wines, Sorum shared a humorous story involving an extravagant dinner with Charlie Sheen and exorbitant wine bills.
Aside from his rockstar lifestyle, Sorum is deeply involved with the Raven Drum Foundation, a therapeutic organization founded by Def Leppard’s Rick Allen and his wife Lauren Monroe. The foundation aims to support individuals through drumming circles as a form of therapy, providing a space for healing and emotional connection.
Excited about the upcoming event in Wyoming, Sorum expressed his enthusiasm for the impactful work done by the foundation and the opportunity to participate in the healing process alongside other renowned drummers.
From music to philanthropy, Matt Sorum’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of music and community. Stay tuned for more revelations from the rock legend in part two of our interview!
