Duff McKagan reveals the untold secrets behind Guns N’ Roses’ groundbreaking album ‘Appetite For Destruction’
Duff McKagan, known for his contributions to various big-name Rock bands and solo projects, will always be recognized as the bassist for Guns ’N Roses.
After parting ways with the group and getting sober at age 30, McKagan reunited with Guns ’N Roses following their induction into the Rock ’N Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Reconnecting with fellow members Slash and Axl Rose, McKagan took a moment to reflect on past memories, particularly the making of “Appetite for Destruction,” during his appearance on the Broken Record podcast.
The debut studio album marked a significant turning point in the band’s career, and McKagan attributes part of their success to having the right producer, Mike Clink. After meeting with KISS’s Paul Stanley and realizing their artistic visions differed, the band turned to Clink.
According to McKagan, Clink brought structure, leadership, and fresh ideas to their recording sessions, helping them capture the desired sound. The band’s first recording session with Clink, using an 8-track reel to reel setup, impressed them with its quality.
Not only did the sound improve, but the band also became more efficient in the studio, thanks to Clink’s ability to focus their creative energy. McKagan praised Clink for guiding them through the recording process and encouraging them to deliver their best performances in just a few takes.
Clink’s calm and gentle demeanor helped keep the often lively group of musicians on track. He had a way of gently nudging them in the right direction when they got off course, urging them to “dig in” and give their all.
