FUGA Distributor Sets Sights on Shutting Down Kanye West’s ‘Vultures 1’
Kanye West’s journey to release a new album last year took an unexpected turn when his collaboration with Ty Dolla $ign, titled Vultures 1, hit the music scene this past Saturday. Surprisingly, the album was distributed through FUGA, a business-to-business tech and distribution platform for labels. Despite this, FUGA expressed its displeasure, with a spokesperson revealing that they initially declined the opportunity to release Vultures 1.
The situation escalated when, on Friday, February 9, 2024, a long-standing FUGA client uploaded the album through the platform’s automated processes, contrary to their service agreement. As a result, FUGA is currently in the process of working with its DSP partners and the client to remove Vultures 1 from their systems. The future actions of FUGA regarding the album’s removal or potential transfer to another distributor remain uncertain.
Notably, Kanye West’s team has not provided any comments on the matter. When West initially sought a new distributor for his music, some potential partners hesitated due to the rapper’s controversial remarks, while others were concerned about the potential lack of support from streaming services for the album.
The lead single from Vultures 1, titled “Vultures,” was distributed by Label Engine, a company under Create Music Group. A follow-up track, “Talking/Once Again,” was also released by Label Engine, with the complete album subsequently delivered by FUGA.
Unfortunately, Vultures 1 faced additional challenges following its release, with multiple delays plaguing its launch. Moreover, the track “Good (Don’t Die)” was pulled from Spotify after a complaint from Donna Summer’s estate. In an Instagram Story posted on the official Donna Summer account, the estate accused West of copyright infringement for using elements of Donna Summer’s song “I Feel Love” without permission.
The turbulent journey of Vultures 1 illustrates the complexities and obstacles that artists encounter in the music industry. Despite the setbacks, Kanye West’s fans eagerly anticipate his next moves and future projects. The evolving saga surrounding Vultures 1 serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the music business and the resilience required to navigate its challenges successfully.
