The iconic musician, who auditioned for the band in 1995, just after wrapping up his solo project Pride & Glory and during the recording of Ozzy Osbourne’s Ozzmosis album, spilled the beans in a candid interview with SiriusXM’s Ozzy’s Boneyard.
According to Wylde, the invite to jam with Guns N’ Roses came directly from Axl Rose himself. In his own words, “‘Axl called me up and he was just like, ‘Hey Zakk, it’s Axl.” Intrigued by the idea, Wylde agreed and joined the band for jam sessions to explore new musical ideas. However, the plans seemed to fizzle out, leaving Wylde in a bit of a lurch as he humorously mentioned, “I need to save up for pizza money and a soda pop to take out my girlfriend.”
Despite the exciting prospect of collaborating with such iconic rockstars, Wylde’s allegiance to Ozzy Osbourne remained unwavering. The metal maestro acknowledged, “I owe everything to Oz, so the Guns thing was just lying dormant.” This turn of events led Wylde to embark on the Retirement Sucks! Tour with Ozzy later that year, providing him with a steady income to indulge in pizza and soda pop extravaganzas with his girlfriend.
Fast forward to 1998, Wylde took matters into his own hands and founded Black Label Society, ensuring that he and his girlfriend never have to worry about going hungry again. This bold move marked a significant turning point in Wylde’s career, solidifying his status as a force to be reckoned with in the world of rock and metal music.
