NBA superfan Lil Wayne recently made a surprise appearance in a new ad narrated by Chris Rock for the 2024 NBA playoffs. The one-minute spot, titled “Playoff Mode,” was released just a day before the play-in tournament round commenced. The premise of the ad is centered around the idea that many A-list NBA players do not even believe that the playoffs are a significant event.
The ad kicks off with a reporter questioning Jayson Tatum about the existence of “Playoff Jayson.” Tatum, the Celtics forward, solemnly denies its existence, with a headline appearing on screen stating, “Tatum denies ‘Playoff Jayson’ is a thing.”
Rock, with his signature quick-witted remarks, interjects and challenges Tatum’s denial, asserting that everyone knows it’s a real phenomenon. The ad showcases other NBA players like Donovan “Spida” Mitchell, Jalen Brunson, Damian Lillard, Nikola Jokić, and Anthony Edwards all adamantly denying the significance of the playoffs in humorous ways.
As tensions rise, Lillard, visibly irritated, angrily tears off a “Playoff” tag from his locker, emphasizing that it’s not a thing. The ad then shifts focus to Lil Wayne, who confidently affirms the existence of “Playoff Tunechi,” demonstrating his unwavering belief in the playoffs, even while struggling to win an NBA player plush toy from a claw machine.
Among the celebrities spotted in the front row of a playoff game are chef Guy Fieri and Puerto Rican superstar Anuel AA. However, when Rock humorously comments that “even Chuck’s playoff jokes are funnier,” NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal quickly shuts down the notion by playfully adding a mustache and glasses to a photo of Charles Barkley and stating, “No they are not.”
The ad concludes with a reminder of the upcoming playoff games, with Chicago facing Miami on ESPN at 7 p.m. ET and Sacramento playing against New Orleans on TNT at 9:30 p.m. ET. The first round of playoffs is set to begin the following day.
