Kris Kristofferson, the legendary country music icon, quietly played his final live show in 2020. The setlist of this momentous performance was packed with his most important songs spanning his illustrious career.
The show took place on Jan. 30, 2020, at the Stardust Theater onboard the Norwegian Pearl during the fifth annual Outlaw Country Cruise. Merle Haggard’s legendary band, the Strangers, backed Kristofferson on stage for a set that included several Haggard covers along with Kristofferson’s own hits.
Notably, Rolling Stone reported that many artists influenced by Kristofferson, including Lucinda Williams, Shooter Jennings, Jim Lauderdale, and Steve Earle, paid tribute to him with a special performance during the cruise. The all-star lineup closed the show with a group rendition of “Why Me,” with Kristofferson leading the way.
Kristofferson’s illustrious career culminated in this final live performance. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1977, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985, and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004. In addition, in 2016, he joined the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame, and in 2019, the Country Music Association honored him with the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award.
