The official induction ceremony for these esteemed artists is set to take place later this year, with the event airing live on ABC and available for streaming on Hulu the following day.

While the Class of 2024 boasts remarkable names, some notable artists who were nominated this year but did not make the final cut include Mariah Carey, Sade, and Eric B & Rakim.

A Tribe Called Quest had previously been nominated twice for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022 and 2023 before finally securing their spot in the Hall on their third attempt. They now join an elite group of only six rap groups to have been inducted, following the likes of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, and N.W.A.

After missing out on the induction the previous year, Consequence, a longtime affiliate of A Tribe Called Quest, criticized the selection process, emphasizing the group’s significant contributions to Black music and calling out the lack of recognition they received.

Mary J. Blige, who was also nominated for induction in 2021 but did not make the cut, joins the ranks of iconic female artists like Missy Elliott, who became the first female rapper to be inducted into the Hall of Fame last year.

In her acceptance speech, Missy Elliott paid tribute to the female pioneers of Hip Hop who paved the way for artists like her. She acknowledged artists like Salt-N-Pepa, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Roxanne Shante, and Monie Love, expressing her gratitude for the inspiration they provided.

Other notable rappers who have been previously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame include JAY-Z, Eminem, The Notorious B.I.G., and 2Pac.
