Exciting news for Johnny Cash fans! A brand-new album featuring never-before-heard songs by the legendary country icon is set to be released later this year. Titled Songwriter, this album is a treasure trove of tracks that Cash penned back in 1993 during a hiatus from recording contracts when he was staying at LSI Studios in Nashville.
Discovered by Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, and brought back to life with the help of producer David “Fergie” Ferguson and some of Cash’s former collaborators including guitarist Marty Stuart, bassist Dave Roe, and drummer Pete Abbotts, these songs offer a glimpse into a previously unknown chapter of Cash’s illustrious career.
John Carter Cash shared, “Dad’s advice was always to ‘follow your heart,’ whether in life or in music. The musicians who worked on this album, like Marty Stuart and Dave Roe, knew Cash’s energy and let him guide the recording process. It was like playing with Johnny once again, and that energy fueled the creative process.”
This album aims to showcase Cash’s songwriting skills and his role as a quintessential American voice. John Carter Cash stated, “Johnny Cash is one true voice that we can listen to, specifically in his writings. I want to highlight his legacy as a great American writer, as acknowledged by Bob Dylan.”
Producer David Ferguson added, “Johnny Cash was always my hero, and recording him was a dream come true. I believe he would be proud of this album, as he always felt each record he made was his best work. Songwriter is a testament to his talent and legacy.”
