Relive the Epic De La Soul Show with Mos Def & Common – A Historic Night for Fans!
De La Soul, the iconic rap group, has announced a special treat for fans by inviting them to relive their legendary show from 1996 at Tramps in New York City. This historic concert featured appearances from hip-hop heavyweights such as Common, Jungle Brothers, and a young Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def.
The veteran rap group took to social media to reveal that the full concert would be streamed on YouTube on Friday, April 26. De La Soul shared, “Join us this Friday, April 26th at 2 PM ET for an unforgettable experience as we premiere the full concert âLive at Tramps, NYC, 1996â on YouTube. Witness the magic of that historic night, complete with special guest appearances by Mos Def, Common, and Jungle Brothers.”
De La Soul has been making waves over the past year since their back catalog was finally made available on streaming platforms after years of legal battles. Issues with their former label, Tommy Boy Records, over uncleared samples and the groupâs contract had prevented much of their music, including classic albums like 3 Feet High & Rising, De La Soul is Dead, and Buhloone Mindstate, from being digitally accessible.
In 2019, the group revealed that they would only receive 10 percent of streaming revenue as per their contract and chose not to agree to a proposed deal. However, after Tommy Boy was acquired by Reservoir Media in 2021, the group regained control over their music, paving the way for their music to reach a wider audience.
With this newfound freedom, De La Soul recently released a special 35th-anniversary edition of 3 Feet High and Rising, featuring two previously unreleased âhome demosâ recorded in group member Maseoâs basement. The anniversary edition also included four bonus tracks that had never been available digitally before.
While the group now operates as a duo following the tragic passing of Trugoy The Dove last year, they have remained active in the music scene. In addition to releasing new music and reissuing classic albums, De La Soul has been making waves on the live circuit, performing on major platforms such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and touring with the likes of Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan.
De La Soul’s journey from legal battles over their music to reclaiming their legacy and bringing their iconic sound to new audiences is a testament to their enduring talent and influence in the world of hip-hop. As fans eagerly await the premiere of their historic concert from 1996, it’s clear that De La Soul’s impact on music will continue to resonate for years to come.
