From Circus Escapee to Rock Star: Genevieve Glynn-Reeves’ Unconventional Journey

Meet Genevieve Glynn-Reeves, the talented singer and lyricist behind Gen & The Degenerates. According to Genevieve, their debut album, titled “Anti-Fun Propaganda,” is a time capsule that captures the essence of being in your twenties at the end of the world. With the rise of artists like IDLES, Amyl & The Sniffers, and Kid Kapichi in the rock music scene, Gen & The Degenerates are poised for success.

Produced by Ross Orton, known for his work with Gang Of Four and Arctic Monkeys, “Anti-Fun Propaganda” offers a smart, funny take on the modern age through riffy, punky alt-rock tunes. The album delves into topics such as online living, gender politics, and global tensions with a mix of silliness, sexiness, and seriousness.

Genevieve describes their sound as accidentally punk, influenced by the resurgence of punk music and her background in spoken poetry. As a queer student in Liverpool, she found inspiration in artists like Benjamin Zephaniah and Jeff Town, who helped her feel at home. Alongside bandmates Sean Healand-Sloan, Jacob Jones, Evan Reeves, and Jay Humphreys, Gen & The Degenerates bring a diverse range of influences to their music, from Metallica to Green Day to the Eurythmics.

Reflecting on her upbringing in Cambridgeshire, Genevieve recalls a free-form childhood spent in a “wonky” bungalow next to an A-road. Surrounded by storytellers like Kirsty MacColl and Annie Lennox, she developed a love for music early on. Despite a brief foray into circus aerialism, health issues forced Genevieve to shift her focus to music, ultimately leading to the formation of the band.

The decision to shave her head marked a turning point for Genevieve, signaling a rejection of the male gaze that often overshadowed her talent and creativity. With “Anti-Fun Propaganda” now released via Marshall, Gen & The Degenerates are ready to make their mark on the music scene with their unique blend of punk attitude and storytelling prowess.
