Exciting news for Nightwish fans as keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen has shared new details about the band’s upcoming single, “Perfume Of The Timeless.” This track, set for release on May 21, will serve as the lead single from the Finnish symphonic metal giants’ highly anticipated 10th album, “Yesterwynde,” which is scheduled to drop on September 20.
“Perfume Of The Timeless” marks Nightwish’s first new song in four years, following their ninth album, “Human :||: Nature,” released in 2020. Holopainen provided insights on the single in a recent interview with Kerrang!, revealing that the song is a whopping eight-and-a-half minutes long, with the chorus not making an appearance until the three-and-a-half-minute mark.
In explaining the song’s extended length, Holopainen shared, “when we had the first meeting with Nuclear Blast, discussing the new album and singles, I told them the first single would be a song called ‘Perfume Of The Timeless,’ and it’s eight-and-a-half minutes long, with the chorus coming in at 3:30.” The response? “Perfect!”
The musician further elaborated, “[W]e can do whatever we want, and I do, but it says something that we can do that, when I heard that for Spotify it’s good to have the vocals start after 15 seconds, or people skip it, they don’t have the attention span anymore.” Holopainen’s approach reflects Nightwish’s artistry and legacy in the industry, setting them apart with their creative freedom.
On the topic of Nightwish’s temporary hiatus from live performances, first announced in June 2023, Holopainen assured fans that it’s not the end of the band. With singer Floor Jansen undergoing personal changes, including the birth of her second child in October, the band decided to take a breather from touring.
Despite the break from live shows, Holopainen hinted at more music to come, thanks to a multi-record deal with Nuclear Blast. He expressed, “[W]e’re just gonna have a long breather now and see what happens. That’s all I can say at the moment. We got our fair share in 2022 and 2023 when we did a lot of shows. So that helped.”
With the anticipation building for “Yesterwynde,” Nightwish also unveiled the album’s art and track listing, hinting at an immersive journey for listeners. The tracklist includes intriguing titles such as “An Ocean Of Strange Islands,” “The Antikythera Mechanism,” “Spider Silk,” and more, promising a diverse and captivating musical experience.
