Exclusive Interview: Dave Grohl Reflects on Epic Nirvana Reunion at Cal Jam 2018!

Foo Fighters, the iconic rock band led by Dave Grohl, had big plans for their own curated festivals before the world came to a halt in early 2020. Following successful events like Cal Jam in California, they were gearing up for D.C. Jam in Baltimore that same year, but unfortunately, it never came to fruition due to unforeseen circumstances.

Since then, Foo Fighters have experienced significant changes, including the heartbreaking loss of drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022. After a period of mourning and reflection, the band decided to move forward. They introduced their new drummer, Josh Freese, and embarked on an extensive tour in 2024.

Despite the challenges they’ve faced, Foo Fighters have not mentioned the possibility of hosting their festival again. However, the memories they created at Cal Jam will forever remain special. In 2018, the festival ended with a memorable Nirvana reunion featuring Dave Grohl, Pat Smear, and Krist Novoselic. They performed six Nirvana classics with guest vocalists John McCauley and Joan Jett.

Reflecting on the reunion, Grohl expressed the complex emotions tied to revisiting Nirvana’s music without Kurt Cobain. He acknowledged the mix of joy and sorrow that accompanied each performance, noting the lasting impact of the band’s music.

While Foo Fighters are set to return to the UK for a series of stadium shows, fans shouldn’t expect a Nirvana encore. However, they can relive the magic of the Cal Jam reunion through videos and memories. Grohl’s dream of playing Nirvana’s songs again highlights the profound connection musicians have with their music.

As Foo Fighters continue their musical journey, their resilience and commitment to honoring their past while embracing the future shine through. The upcoming UK shows promise to be both exhilarating and emotional, showcasing the band’s enduring passion for performing.
