The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival recently concluded its 53rd edition after two consecutive four-day weekends. The festival’s 2024 edition boasted its second-highest attendance ever, with half a million people flocking to the event. The lineup was headlined by The Rolling Stones, who were unable to perform in 2019 due to Mick Jagger’s heart valve replacement surgery and in 2021 when the entire festival was postponed due to Covid.
Variety described the atmosphere at the festival as electric, especially when the legendary “Soul Queen of New Orleans,” Irma Thomas, took the stage with The Rolling Stones. Thomas, known for her classic “Time Is on My Side,” which The Rolling Stones turned into one of their earliest hits, joined the band for a memorable performance. At 83 years old, Thomas still commanded the stage with grace and poise, showcasing her timeless talent alongside the iconic rock band.
Aside from The Rolling Stones, the festival lineup featured an impressive array of artists, including Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Foo Fighters, The Killers, Jon Batiste, Chris Stapleton, Vampire Weekend, Juvenile, Queen Latifah, Anderson .Paak, Big Freedia, Heart, The Revivalists, Stephen Marley, Bonnie Raitt, Bomba Estereo, Béla Fleck, Michael Franti, and many more.
Attendees were treated to a diverse range of musical performances, from rock and pop to jazz, hip-hop, and Zydeco. Artists like Jon Batiste, Oumou Sangaré, Zigaboo Modeliste, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, and Donald Harrison Jr. brought their unique styles to the stage, captivating the audience with their energy and talent.
The festival also featured a special tribute by Neil Young & Crazy Horse to mark the 54th anniversary of the Kent State University shootings, with a poignant rendition of “Ohio.” The emotional performance resonated with the crowd and highlighted the festival’s commitment to celebrating music’s power to unite and inspire.
One of the standout moments of the festival was when The Rolling Stones invited Zydeco Hellraisers leader Dwayne Dopsie to join them on stage for a rendition of “Let it Bleed.” The collaboration showcased the band’s versatility and willingness to embrace diverse musical influences, much to the delight of the audience.
Throughout the festival, attendees were treated to a visual feast as well, with stunning performances by artists like The Beach Boys, Cha Wa, Stephen Marley, and more. The vibrant energy and cultural richness of New Orleans were on full display, creating an immersive experience for all who attended.
