Legendary Charlie Wilson Makes History with Record-Breaking No. 1 Hits on Adult R&B Charts!
Charlie Wilson has once again proven himself as a legend in the music industry by reclaiming the title for the most No. 1s by a male artist on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart. Just two weeks after Usher tied Wilson for the achievement, Wilson’s hit song “Superman” topped the list dated May 11. The song made a remarkable jump from No. 3 after an 8% increase in plays, becoming the most-played song on U.S. monitored adult R&B radio stations in the week of April 26 to May 2.
With “Superman,” Wilson now holds the record for achieving his 10th No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay. This feat not only establishes him as the male artist with the most chart-topping hits but also makes him one of only three artists to reach double-digit No. 1s on the list since its launch in 1993.
The artists with the most No. 1s on the Adult R&B Airplay chart are as follows:
- Alicia Keys – 14
- Toni Braxton – 11
- Charlie Wilson – 10
- Usher – 9
- Mary J. Blige – 8
- H.E.R. – 8
- Kem – 8
- Bruno Mars – 8
- Maxwell – 8
- Tank – 8
Wilson expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he received for “Superman,” stating, “To have another No. 1 hit on the Billboard Adult R&B chart is truly an important achievement to me, especially with a song so personal highlighting my wife’s endless love and support of me.” He dedicated the song to all women, acknowledging their strength, love, and support that is often underappreciated.
While “Superman” may have dipped in ranks on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, Wilson’s success as a solo artist is undeniable. Known as “Uncle Charlie,” he was also the lead singer of the iconic group The Gap Band. The trio, consisting of Charlie, Robert, and Ronnie, achieved 15 top 10 hits on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart during their career, including classics like “Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me),” “Outstanding,” and “You Dropped a Bomb on Me.”
Charlie Wilson’s talent and impact on the music industry continue to shine, cementing his status as a true music legend whose contributions will be celebrated for years to come.
