Slash’s Surprising Encounter with Steven Tyler and Brian Johnson: The Stories Behind Epic Collaborations
Slash, iconic guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, recently unveiled the first track from his upcoming blues-themed album, Orgy of the Damned. The track is a cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Killing Floor,” featuring the legendary Brian Johnson of AC/DC on vocals and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler on harmonica.
In a recent interview with the Swedish radio station Rokklassiker, Slash shared how this collaboration with Johnson and Tyler came about. He mentioned that when selecting songs for the album, he immediately thought of Johnson for “Killing Floor,” given their long-standing friendship. Without hesitation, Slash contacted Johnson, who was thrilled to participate as Howlin’ Wolf had been a major influence on him in his youth. The recording process was organic and enjoyable, resulting in a remarkable rendition of the song.
Slash also discussed Tyler’s involvement in the project, noting that when he informed Tyler about the song, Tyler offered to play harmonica without any prompting. The spontaneous collaboration added an extra layer of creativity to the track, making it a memorable experience for all involved.
For Slash, having both Johnson and Tyler contribute to his album was a significant honor. He expressed gratitude towards the two rock legends, acknowledging their respective bands, AC/DC and Aerosmith, as major influences on his musical journey. The coming together of these artists to celebrate Howlin’ Wolf symbolized a fusion of three generations of rock music.
Slash also shared a special detail about “Killing Floor,” revealing that the song features a tribute to Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page. In a nod to his guitar hero, Slash incorporated a note-for-note lick that Page played during a live performance, showcasing his admiration for the legendary musician.
