Questlove Speaks Out: Is Hip Hop Dead Because of Kendrick Lamar & Drake Feud?
Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s fiery feud has captured the attention of the Hip Hop nation, but not everyone is impressed. Questlove, The Roots drummer, took to Instagram to express his disappointment in the ongoing rap battle, going as far as to say that Hip Hop is “truly dead.” Questlove criticized both rappers for dragging each other’s family members into the feud and making scandalous yet unproven allegations on their diss tracks.
Questlove felt that the feud was more about mudslinging than showcasing skills, and he challenged Kendrick and Drake to elevate themselves morally instead of resorting to underhanded tactics. Both artists have engaged in personal attacks and wild accusations in their diss tracks, with Drake suggesting that one of Kendrick’s children may not be his own and accusing him of domestic violence. Kendrick, on the other hand, has accused Drake of being a predator who indulges in illegal activities and neglects his children.
Questlove’s critique aligns with that of Charlamagne Tha God, who has also raised concerns about the direction the feud has taken. While Charlamagne acknowledged the competitiveness of the rap battle, he expressed disapproval of the serious accusations being thrown around without substantial evidence to back them up.
During an appearance on The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne emphasized the need for accountability and proof when making such grave allegations against one another. He denounced the use of Me Too-like tactics in a rap feud and urged both Kendrick and Drake to focus on their craft rather than tarnishing each other’s image.
Despite the controversy surrounding the feud, many in the Hip Hop community have lauded it as one of the best rap battles in recent memory. Kendrick Lamar has been widely regarded as the current front runner, with his lyrical prowess and biting verses earning him praise from fans and critics alike.
While the Kendrick Lamar and Drake feud has certainly captured the imagination of the music world, the personal attacks and scandalous accusations have overshadowed the artistry and talent of the two artists. As the feud continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Kendrick and Drake will heed the calls for a more respectful and honorable approach to their rivalry.
