The Shocking Night Debbie Harry Accepted a Ride from Serial Killer Ted Bundy: A Deadly Mistake Revealed
New York City in the mid-1970s was a city facing numerous challenges, including a rise in violent crime. Visitors arriving at the city’s airports in the summer of 1975 were greeted with a pamphlet titled “A Survival Guide for Visitors to the City of New York,” featuring a hooded skull and the ominous words “Welcome To Fear City.” The pamphlet contained nine guidelines, one of which advised tourists not to walk anywhere in the Five Boroughs after 6pm. Local residents didn’t have the luxury of avoiding the city’s streets, and those working at night had to navigate the city’s dangers.
Before the local punk and New Wave icons Blondie signed with UK record label Chrysalis, lead vocalist Debbie Harry worked as a waitress at Max’s Kansas City, a popular nightclub and hangout spot for celebrities like John Lennon and Andy Warhol. Late nights in the city sometimes led to unexpected encounters, including a terrifying run-in with notorious serial killer Ted Bundy.
In a 2002 interview with MOJO magazine, Harry recounted the night she unknowingly entered Bundy’s Volkswagen Beetle. Despite initially finding the driver charming and good-looking, she soon realized the dire situation she was in. With no handle on the door and a distinct lack of belongings in the car, Harry’s instincts kicked in, and she managed to escape the vehicle as Bundy attempted to speed away.
Reflecting on the incident in later years, Harry acknowledged how fortunate she was to have escaped unharmed. Bundy, who was arrested in 1978, later confessed to committing 30 murders across seven states between 1974 and 1978. He was ultimately executed in a Florida prison in 1989.
The story serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers that lurked in New York City during a tumultuous period in its history. Despite the city’s reputation for grit and glamour, the reality for many residents and visitors was far more sinister.
