Discover Robert Trujillo’s unforgettable experience at Metallica’s first shows: The thrilling mystery of the setlist each night

Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo has shared some insights into his early days with the legendary thrash metal band, and it turns out things were quite chaotic. Trujillo, who joined Metallica in 2003, replacing Jason Newsted, recently discussed his experience during an interview with 107.7 The Bone.

Trujillo revealed that back in 2003, he often found himself not knowing what songs the band would be playing at each show. This uncertainty added to the pressure of being the new member of such an iconic band. He mentioned learning songs like “Phantom Lord” on the spot, which they hadn’t played in a long time. This challenge was exacerbated by the fact that one of his first performances with Metallica was at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center prison on May 1, 2003.

Despite the stress and pressure, Trujillo embraced the experience and used it as motivation to learn more Metallica songs than required. He wanted to ensure that he would never be caught off-guard again like he was at the beginning.

While Trujillo did not play on Metallica’s 2003 album “St. Anger,” as it was recorded before he joined the band, he did appear in the music video for the title track, which was filmed at San Quentin. Producer Bob Rock handled the bass duties on that album.

Fast forward to today, with years of experience under his belt, Trujillo is an integral part of Metallica’s lineup. The band is gearing up to hit the road once again later this month. Check out their full list of announced tour dates for 2024:
