Legendary Steve Perry collaborates with Lukather and Collins’ sons on epic rerecording of Journey classic!
The music scene is abuzz with the exciting news of a new band emerging onto the scene – The Effect. Comprised of guitarist Trev Lukather and drummer Nic Collins, who happen to be the sons of legendary musicians Steve Lukather of Toto and Phil Collins of Genesis, this band is already making waves with their latest release.
Their new single is a cover of Journey’s classic song, “It Could Have Been You,” originally featured on Journey’s 1986 album, “Raised On Radio.” What makes this cover even more special is the collaboration with Journey’s former lead singer, Steve Perry. While lead vocals on the track are handled by The Effect’s frontman, Emmett Lee Stang, Steve Perry lends his iconic voice to the backing vocals, adding a touch of nostalgia and authenticity to the new rendition.
Describing the cover, Perry expressed his admiration for the band’s interpretation, calling it “completely current, refreshed, and ready to go out there and do some damage.” The mutual respect between Lukather and Perry is evident, with Lukather describing Perry as a mentor and expressing his gratitude for Perry’s support and involvement in the project.
The roots of this collaboration run deep, with Lukather and Perry sharing a long-standing relationship that transcends generations of music. Lukather’s admiration for Perry’s vocals is apparent, with him hailing Perry as the “GOAT,” or Greatest of All Time, in the music industry. The opportunity to work with a vocal powerhouse like Perry is a dream come true for The Effect, and they are thrilled to have his stamp of approval on their rendition of Journey’s classic track.
Prior to forming The Effect, Lukather Jr was a member of the band Levara, whose debut album was released in 2021. However, his departure from the band paved the way for the inception of The Effect, where he joined forces with Collins to create a fresh sound that combines elements of rock, pop, and nostalgia.
The Effect’s debut single, “Unwanted,” released last year, foreshadowed the band’s potential and set the stage for their latest collaboration with Perry. As they continue to carve out their place in the music industry, The Effect is poised to capture the hearts of fans around the world with their unique sound and undeniable talent.
